In 1947, the Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association (SATA) was set-up to combat Tuberculosis (TB). At that time medical facilities to fight this virulent disease were inadequate and public funds were channeled to the more pressing need of post-war reconstruction.

Over the years, with a decrease in the incidence of TB, SATA has evolved to offer a wider range of healthcare services to the community. This year, it’s name was changed to Sata CommHealth to reflect its evolution and growth to a community health provider. It exists today as a social enterprise and serves the community by providing health care services under three broad categories – Preventive Healthcare, Medical Treatment & Health Education.

However TB is not eradicated and Sata CommHealth acknowledges that if left uncontrolled, TB can still be a major health threat. It recognizes the importance of research to promote evidence-based medicine in the treatment of TB and lung disease. With this aim in mind, the SATA (CommHealth) Research Grant was set-up in 2009 to support research projects on TB and lung health in Singapore.

This fund will disburse up to SGD 300,000 per financial year. All applications will be reviewed by the Sata CommHealth Research Committee. Priority will be given to prospects that will have a positive impact on Singapore’s healthcare system and are in line with Sata Commhealth’s mission.

Applications for 2010 are now accepted. Deadline of submission is 1 December 2009.
