SATA COMMHEALTH BRINGS PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICES TO THE NORTHERN HEARTLAND
OF SINGAPORE

Singapore, 1 August 2010 – Residents in the northern district of Singapore will enjoy accessible and affordable physiotherapy with the introduction of the new physiotherapy service at SATA CommHealth’s Woodlands Medical Centre.  Officially opened by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of the North West District and Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang, the physiotherapy clinic located at the Woodlands Civic Centre is a boon to residents of Woodlands, Admiralty, Marsiling and Sembawang as it provides another centre of physiotherapy apart from the physiotherapy centre at the Woodlands Polyclinic.

SATA CommHealth, formerly known as Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association (or SATA), started this service to help patients living in the north to develop, maintain or restore physical and functional ability due to injury, disease or natural ageing.  SATA CommHealth has evolved from its past eminence as chest and lung clinics to a comprehensive primary care provider for the community today.  Adopting a holistic approach to healthcare, SATA CommHealth is currently expanding its services to include rehabilitation and out-patient step-down care, while it continues to look at the emerging needs of an ageing population.

The new physiotherapy service is delivered within a dedicated space of about 2,500 sq ft, consisting of a gymnasium fully equipped with modern equipment to treat people with sports injuries, post-surgical/hospitalization rehabilitation, prolonged illness and age-related functional disabilities. People requiring physiotherapy are required to obtain a doctor’s referral, thereafter the physiotherapist will conduct a thorough evaluation, before working out an individually tailored programme.  Such a programme will include different treatment modalities and follow-up visits as part of progress monitoring by the physiotherapist.  The physiotherapy clinic charges reasonable rates for its services, as it believes in affordable healthcare.  To address the plight of the underprivileged, SATA CommHealth has made provisions to support needy patients with subsidies.

Manned by two therapists, SATA CommHealth physiotherapy clinic also plans to meet the needs of an ageing population by conducting wellness programmes for the elderly.  To help the elderly cope with minor disabilities, a “medical gym” is set aside for them to exercise under close supervision of a physiotherapist who is experienced with therapy for the elderly. The small group wellness sessions will accord individualised care and attention to the elderly patients as they engage in varied physical activities such as mobility, strength, balance, coordination and endurance exercises.  The clinic also plans to conduct training sessions for caregivers to equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills to better care for the elderly with disabilities in a home or residential setting.

Highlighting the benefits of the new physiotherapy clinic for the residents in the northwest district, SATA CommHealth’s CEO, Dr K Thomas Abraham stressed, “This new service is in line with SATA CommHealth’s mission to promote lifelong health to the community. With this new service, we move another step closer to provide holistic and affordable one-stop healthcare services to the people residing in the northern heartland.  Our medical centre situated at the Woodlands Civic Centre is well positioned to serve the residents of Woodlands, Admiralty, Marsiling and Sembawang with physiotherapy services.”

SATA CommHealth to provide free health screenings at LOHAS 2010

Singapore, 10 May 2010 – SATA CommHealth is pleased to announce its support of Lianhe Zaobao’s LOHAS Mega Health Seminar 2010 and LOHAS Total Wellness Challenge 2010. 250 participants are expected to benefit from the free health screenings to be provided at the events slated to take place on 22 May (Sat) and 2 July (Sat) respectively.

As part of the 63-year-old charity’s ongoing efforts to serve the community, SATA CommHealth will be conducting body fat analysis, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose tests worth a total of $29 for those who sign up for the LOHAS Total Wellness Challenge. Selected participants will also be invited to go for a free health assessment at the “Health & U” mega health exhibition, which will be held on 3 July 2010 at Suntec Convention Centre.

SATA CommHealth believes in preventive healthcare. Early detection of these diseases can prevent complications, reduce the cost of treatment and ensure better recovery. As a form of giving back to society, the voluntary welfare organisation conducts regular free health screenings for the community to help them monitor their health.

SATA CommHealth also organises smoking prevention camps for students, health education talks as well as offering a mobile clinic service called Doctors-On-Wheels.

Dr K Thomas Abraham, CEO of SATA CommHealth, said: “We are honoured to support Lianhe Zaobao’s efforts in educating the public on holistic health approaches that will in turn encourage them to attain total wellness. Medical screenings are vital in detecting diseases, many of which do not produce early warning signs. We hope that our participation in the LOHAS event will raise the public’s awareness of the need for regular medical checks.”

"Community Health Weekend" A Huge Success at SATA's Commhealth's
Ang Mo Kio Clinic

Singapore, 12 January 2010 – More than 500 members of the public benefited from SATA CommHealth’s Community Health Weekend held from 9-10 January. The event which took place at the voluntary welfare organisation’s Ang Mo Kio medical centre is part of the 62-year-old organisation’s ongoing efforts to serve the community.

Response to its array of free medical screenings available at the event was excellent, which included chest X-rays, mammograms, random glucose tests, blood pressure checks and BMI measurements.

Mammograms in particular were very much in demand. Some ladies showed up as early as 9am to queue for the complimentary screening which started at 2pm on Saturday.

The random glucose test was also a popular service among the public, many of whom were elderly and needy. In response to the overwhelming demand, SATA CommHealth upscaled its capacity for this service so as not to disappoint those who had taken the trouble to come all the way to get their health checked out.

SATA CommHealth’s Operations Manager Madam Seet Kuen Noi was pleased with the turnout. “Health screenings are vital in detecting diseases, many of which do not produce early warning signs. We are heartened by the public’s concern for maintaining their health and early detection of medical problems.”

The event marks the first community outreach effort for SATA CommHealth this year. Other projects in the pipeline include smoking prevention camps, educational talks and the mobile clinic service Doctors-On-Wheels.

On the voluntary welfare organisation’s future plans, Dr K Thomas Abraham, Chief Executive Officer of SATA CommHealth, said: “We have been providing affordable and quality healthcare services to the community since 1947. Moving into 2010, we will continue our tradition of caring for the community. We hope that our extensive experience in providing medical screening services will benefit even more people.”
