Singapore, 13 November 2011 - Amid the escalating healthcare costs and rising incidence of chronic diseases in Singapore, SATA CommHealth is playing an active role to help mitigate these by giving free basic health checks at its Community Health Day (CHD) event.
First started in early 2010, the latest CHD event is the sixth in the series and was held at its SATA Bedok Medical Centre today. From 8.30 am to 1 pm, the public received a range of health checks covering Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and eye tests, chest X-ray and physiotherapy assessments. To help address the rising incidence of breast cancer, the charity healthcare provider offered mammography at a highly subsidised rate of $25.
Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister of State for National Development and Manpower and Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC, graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour. On the public outreach programme by SATA CommHealth to promote lifelong health in the community, Mr Tan said: "Prevention is better than cure. This is imperative in relation to our personal health. The cost of treating acute and chronic illnesses, from both the personal and national perspectives, particularly the latter, could be enormous. As the government tackles the challenges posed by the prevailing resource constraints and rising healthcare costs, VWOs like SATA CommHealth play a welcome role in the healthcare chain. They have helped constituents in Bedok, Chai Chee and Marine Parade GRC to be more aware of their personal health with free health screenings, like what we see here today."
SATA CommHealth, an ardent anti-tuberculosis (TB) and lung health advocate since its founding years, has in 2009 expanded its role and mission to promoting lifelong health and serving the community. Dr K Thomas Abraham, Chief Executive Officer of SATA CommHealth, shared that:
"The progressive and pre-emptive disposition that SATA CommHealth adopted since its establishment in 1947, has enabled us to stay in tune with the prevailing healthcare problems that the community faces. Chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension are becoming more rampant and afflicting the young and middle-aged groups as well. In addition, breast cancer and falls prevention warrant special attention, particularly so with a rapidly ageing population in Singapore. We are providing mammography at a heavily subsidised rate for female participants and conducting free physiotherapy assessments for the elderly at today's event. As the Community Health Day is staged several times a year and rotated among our four medical centres in Bedok, Ang Mo Kio, Woodlands and Jurong, we hope to convey to the public the importance of regular health checks to help maintain lifelong health."
SATA CommHealth typically serves more than 300 people during its Community Health Days.
