Foot Problems in the Elderly
Foot and Ankle problems in the elderly are common both affecting patients biomechanically and also in terms of deformities. As we age and the collagen levels in the muscles tendons and ligaments decrease, stiffness causes more joint issues and deformities to worsen leading to altered biomechanics and tendon and joint pathologies. Dr Ananda, a foot and ankle Orthopaedic Consultant surgeon will speak on strategies and ways to manage and prevent common foot and ankle issues from leading to debilitating symptoms.

Dr Anandakumar is a Swiss-Fellowship trained Board Certified Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon. He currently practices with the Centre For Orthopaedics Group with clinics located in Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Farrer Park Hospital and Parkway East Hospital, Singapore. Dr Ananda has an interest and expertise in complex adult foot and ankle surgery, sports surgery and trauma surgery.
He is well versed in minimally invasive techniques in foot and ankle surgery and in sports injuries of the foot and ankle. He performed the first lateral total ankle replacement in South East Asia. The repertoire of his use of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques span from calcaneal fractures to foot and ankle deformity corrections including flat foot and bunion corrections. He is well versed in the knotless all inside technique of the arthroscopic Brostrum Gould Reconstruction for lateral ankle ligament instability and continues to push the boundaries in minimally invasive techniques in foot and ankle surgery.
Dr Anandakumar completed his medical studies at the National University of Singapore in 2003. He was awarded the Best Houseman Award during his medical posting as a Houseman. He subsequently pursued his postgraduate training in Orthopaedic Surgery in Singapore and obtained his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He was awarded the N.Balachandran Memorial Lectureship award in the final year of his Orthopaedic Residency. He later underwent further training in trauma and foot and ankle surgery in Kantonspital Baselland, and in Inselspital Bern University Hospital in Switzerland under world-renowned Swiss orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr Anandakumar is active in teaching medical students at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School, as well as orthopaedic surgery residents and family medicine trainees. He is part of the Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery Committee that is involved in orchestrating training of junior orthopaedic surgery residents.
Dr Anandakumar has presented at numerous orthopaedic surgery meetings both local and international including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and at the ASEAN Orthopaedic Association (AOA).
He is a member of the European Foot and Ankle Society, the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society of Singapore and the Singapore Orthopaedic Association.
