What is Hepatitis A & B?
Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) is transmitted through direct person-to-person contact (fecal-oral transmission); contaminated water, ice, or shellfish harvested from sewage-contaminated water; or from contaminated raw, inadequately cooked, or frozen fruits, vegetables, or other foods. HAV is shed in the feces of infected people. Hepatitis B is caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) and is spread by contact with body fluids, such as blood, saliva, semen, or vaginal fluids; by needle sticks or sharing needles; or from mother to child.
A blood test to screen for Hepatitis A & B antibodies can be conducted to assess if vaccination is needed
Who should have Hepatitis A & B vaccine?
Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B combination vaccine is recommended for all persons 18 years of age or older who are at risk from infection from their jobs or some behaviours, or from travelling to the following parts of the world like: Africa, Central & South America, Eastern & Southern Europe, South & Southeast Asia (except Japan), The Caribbean, The Middle East, The former Soviet Union.
Doses: 3 doses scheduled at 0,1 and 6 months via intramuscular route.
