What is Polio infection?
Polio is a contagious viral illness that in its most severe form causes nerve injury leading to paralysis, difficulty breathing and sometimes death.
Who should have Polio vaccination and doses recommended?
Adults who are travelling to areas with increased risk of polio and who are not vaccinated, incompletely vaccinated, or whose vaccination status is unknown should receive a series of 3 doses: (2 doses separated by 1 to 2 months, and a third dose 6 to 12 months after the second dose).
Adults who completed the polio vaccine series as children and are travelling to areas with increased risk of polio should receive a one-time booster dose of vaccine (IPV).
